Duplicate files can be a nuisance for several reasons. For one, you end up losing hard disk space. Now depending on your how you use your computer, you might not even need a lot of disk space, but for those who download a lot of stuff, or install a lot of game and apps, every byte counts. Duplicate File Searcher helps you out with duplicate files. This is a free portable duplicate file finder available for Linux, Windows and Mac.
Before we go any further, note that this is a Java app, and even though it itself is portable, you still need to have Java installed in order to use it. Multiple directories, including sub-directories can be searched at once. All the files from the selected folders are gonna be compared and checked to see if they are the same. Add folders by clicking on the Add button from the right sidebar.
This free portable duplicate file finder can find duplicates either by checking file name, date of creation, file length or by using byte for byte comparison. You can tweak what kind of search you’d like to have in the Searching Options tab. Put checkmarks next to types of duplicate file search that you’re interested in using.
Once you’re finished with setup, clicking on the Start button in the bottom left corner starts the duplicate file search. Search results can be found in the last, “Results” tab. There you can also go over the list of found duplicates and remove them, leaving only one copy, as it should be.
Search results of compared files can be saved to databases so that it’s more faster to compare files for duplicates next time (file database is used, instead of actual files for comparison). Results tab can show image preview for images, but you need to turn it on by putting a checkmark inside the Results tab.
This free portable duplicate file finder is very easy to setup and works very fast. If you don’t mind Java, which is required to use Duplicate File Searcher and you need to find duplicate files on your computer, this is the tool for you.
