Serious Sam 3: BFE On Linux – My Experience – Video

By | June 3, 2013

So here’s my experience with Serious Sam 3: BFE which I am playing successfully on my Linux machine for a few months now. Well to be honest I didn’t play it all that successfully from the very beginning of when I bought the game.

I can thank that to my Intel 2000HD integrated graphics which I’ve been running at the time. Since then I’ve upgraded my hardware and can now run Serious Sam 3: BFE at incredibly low graphics settings, but it works, here’s a quick screencap as proof.

There’s also a video a little bit further down below, if you think that images are boring and outdated. Here’s how my adventure with Serious Sam 3: BFE went.

The beginning

This was my PC setup when trying to run SS3 for the first time:

  • Intel Celeron G530 Dual Core 2.4Ghz
  • Integrated Intel 2000HD graphics
  • 4GB DD3 RAM

It’s a short list of components and some would say that they are outdated, it was like that even when I was building the system a year ago, but I didn’t really have gaming in mind at the time. On top of this hardware I had Linux Mint 13 KDE running, with stock kernel and graphics drivers for the integrated Intel 2000HD graphics card that I was sporting. Things didn’t work all that well with this combo.

You can run the game just fine, but as soon as you reached introductory logos/video, you could see that there’s something very wrong. Everything was out of place, video was slow, jittery, parts of it were missing and so on. Same thing, or should I say a much worse was happening when I ran the actual game. There was basically no graphics, everything was white. So I thought to myself, let’s update the graphics card drivers.

Serious Sam 3: BFE + Intel 2000HD + Driver Update

So after adding the Xorg Edgers PPA and updating the drivers of my integrated graphic, things got much better. The game was now playable. There was still quirks here and there, but it worked. I have no screenshots from those times, but if you upgrade graphics drivers, it’s possible to enjoy Serious Sam even if you’re running IntelHD integrated graphics.

Serious Sam 3: BFE + GeForce GT610 + Nvidia Driver v.313.30

Let’s get straight to it. Video that you see down below is actual footage of Serious Sam 3: BFE running on the very same setup from the beginning of the story with the exception that I added Geforce GT610 as reinforcement in the graphics department and I’m using SolydX as my system now.

Audio get’s out of sync at one point, but as you can see, pretty much everything works. This is still a pretty lousy card, so you can only play the game at very low settings, but it’s a big improvement over the integrated IntelHD graphics.

All in all, this was a very interesting ride. In the end everything works. I could have played the game even with just the IntelHD graphics, but I wanted to see how things will look like with Nvidia graphics. Game is of course awesome. I especially enjoy playing the Survival mode, as you can see from the video above. If you can, make sure to check it out.
